In the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the IEEE Control Systems
Society publishes high-quality papers on the theory, design, and applications
of control engineering. The Transactions is published monthly.
Two types of contributions are regularly considered:
1) Full Papers-Presentation of significant research, development,
or application of control concepts.
Submitted manuscripts must be:
- typewritten in English,
- typed in 12-point font size
- double-spaced
- single-column format
All submitted manuscripts should be as concise as possible. Papers of length exceeding 32 double-spaced, typed pages (including figures) will normally not be considered.
Please note: A mandatory page charge is imposed on all accepted papers exceeding twelve Transactions formatted pages (which equals about 30 double-spaced, typed pages) in length, including illustrations, biographies and photos. The charge is $125 per page for each page over the first twelve pages and is a prerequisite for publication.
2) Technical Notes and Correspondence-Brief technical notes, comments on published areas or established control topics, corrections to papers and notes published in the Transactions. Notes or comments on historical precedence of technical results or on minor errors in outdated papers will not be published, unless the Editorial Board determines the appropriateness of such items on an exceptional basis.
Technical Notes and Correspondence items must be:
- typewritten in English,
- typed in 12-point font size
- 12 double-spaced, single-column format typed pages
- (approximately four Transactions pages using the Technical Note font size)
Authors of Technical Notes and Correspondence items are urged to prepare their manuscript using LaTeX and to make use of the line
\documentclass[12pt,draftcls,onecolumn]{IEEEtran}
The necessary files are available from http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html
When this format is used, manuscripts up to 15 pages long are allowed, provided the figures are of such size that reduction by a factor of two in width and height will not impede legibility of the labels and other symbols; if such is not the case, the allowable number of pages is reduced accordingly, at the discretion of the Editor for Technical Notes and Correspondence
In addition, special papers (tutorials, surveys, and perspectives on
the theory and applications of control systems topics) are solicited. Authors
are urged to contact one of the Associate Editors at Large before submitting
such papers.
Submission of a manuscript signifies that it has been neither copyrighted
nor published, submitted, or accepted for publication elsewhere. IEEE
policy requires that when using their own previously published or submitted
material as a basis for a new submission authors are expected to "cite
the previous work(s) and very clearly indicate how the new submission differs
from the previously published work(s)." [IEEE Publications Operations
Manual, Section 8.2.4F.]
If a submitted manuscript has been published or has been accepted for publication in the Proceedings of an IEEE conference, it may be considered for publication in the Transactions of Automatic Control if evidence is provided that it adds value relative to its conference version (for example, it contains detailed proofs omitted from the conference version, or additional numerical results). This ensures consistency with the policy stated in the previous paragraph.
If, at its time of submission, a manuscript has also been submitted for publication in the Proceedings of an IEEE conference, it will be considered for publication in the Transactions of Automatic Control with the understanding that, should it be found publishable in both venues, evidence will be provided that its final version adds value relative to its conference version, as explained in the previous paragraph.
A. Process for Electronic Submission of Manuscript
All prospective authors must submit their manuscripts electronically (Full Papers or Technical Notes and Correspondence items). Only PDF files are accepted.
Your pdf file should be submitted through the following procedure:
Please go to: http://css.paperplaza.net/journals/tac/ and follow the instructions to upload your pdf file. You will be given the option to upload additional files (e.g., supporting material with your manuscript), as well as send a cover message to the Editor-in-Chief (for Regular Papers) or the Editor for Technical Notes and Correspondence (for Technical Notes and Correspondence items).
NOTE (Security certificate for our submission web site): In attempting to access our new submission web site using Internet Explorer as your browser, you may be warned about a "security certificate" problem. When that happens, one normally sees a screen giving you a few options and one of the options is "Continue to this web site". Selecting this option will get you there and should bypass the problem. Please note that this is only a temporary issue.
RECEPTION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: You will receive an e-mail message acknowledging successful reception of your submission and assigning a Reference Number to your submission. If there was any problem in the reception and printing of your file, you will be notified.
Authors outside the USA: Please make sure that your postscript or pdf files can be printed out correctly on standard US paper size (8 1/2 x 11''). For example, with dvips, use the option "-t letter".
B. Copyright and Export Control Compliance
It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contribution it publishes on behalf of the interests of the IEEE, its authors and their employers, and to facilitate the appropriate reuse of this material by others. To comply with the U.S. Copyright Law, authors are required to sign an IEEE copyright form before publication. This form returns to authors and their employers full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes. The form may be obtained from IEEE Copyright Form
In addition, the IEEE must also comply with U.S. laws or restrictions pertaining to the dissemination of defense-related information. For more information please see http://www.ieee.org/organizations/tab/export_compliance.html
C. Style for Manuscript
1) First page must contain:
a) Title of Paper (without Symbols),
b) Author(s) and affiliation(s),
c) Abstract (not exceeding 300 words for Papers or 75 words for Technical Notes and Correspondence, and without equations, references, or footnotes),
d) For each author: complete mailing address, telephone number, ELECTRONIC MAIL (EMAIL) ADDRESS and facsimile (fax) number.
e) Preferred address for correspondence and return of proofs, and
f) Footnotes (if desired) containing acknowledgment of financial or other support.
2) Provide an Introduction that includes a statement of the purpose and contribution of the paper.
3) If appropriate, indicate advantages, limitations, and possible applications in a Conclusion section.
4) References should be numbered and appear in a separate bibliography
at the end of the paper. Use numerals in square brackets to cite references,
e.g., [15]. References should be complete and in IEEE style (see examples
in a recent issue).
D. Style for Illustrations
1) It is in the author's interest to submit professional quality illustrations. Drafting or art service cannot be provided by the IEEE.
2) Original drawings should be in black ink on white background. Maximum size is restricted to 21.6 by 27.9 cm. Glossy prints of illustrations are also acceptable.
3) All lettering should be large enough to permit legible reduction of the figure to column width, sometimes as small as one quarter of the original size. Typed lettering is usually not acceptable on figures.
4) Lightly pencil each figure number on the back of each original illustration. Captions should not appear on figures.
5) Provide a separate sheet listing all figure captions, in proper style for the typesetter, e.g., "Fig. 5. The error variance for the optimal filter."
6) Contributors' photographs should measure between 1.6 cm and 9.5 cm
across the widest part of the head. The overall size of the photographic
paper use can be anything from passport size to 27.9 cm.
E. Mandatory Overlength Page Charges.
A mandatory page charge is imposed on all papers exceeding twelve Transactions
pages (about 30 double-spaced, typed pages) in length, including illustrations.
The charge is $125 per page for each page over the first twleve and is a
prerequisite for publication. Details are provided at the time of acceptance;
authors are, however, urged to keep this in mind when submitting and revising
their papers.
F. Page Charges.
After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author's company or institution will be approached with a request to pay a charge of $110 per page to cover part of the cost of publication. The author will receive 100 free reprints (without covers) only if the page charge is honored. Detailed instructions will accompany the proofs.
G. Final Accepted Manuscript
When a paper is accepted for publication, it should be put in the Transactions format and sent to the Associate Editor.
Details and style files and templates are available at: http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html
